D-Day Commemoration Event - hosted by Three Saints Parish Council

On Saturday 8 June and following a fantastic Local History Day curated by our All Saints’ resident, Sonia Collins, the Three Saints Councillors and many volunteers hosted a community D-Day Commemoration open-air event for the surrounding villages at the iconic All Saints South Elmham Bus Shelter.

The Event was attended by over 50 people, various dogs and a wonderful Scottish piper, namely, Alasdair Cameron recognising the role that a piper played – under fire - in the actual 1944 D-Day Normandy landings.

The Council would like to thank Cleveleys Foods Ltd for their very generous donation of 60 burgers which were beautifully cooked by ‘chef’ David Lee together with Claire Lee’s unique burger onions, coleslaw and Pavlova to follow! Thank
you to everyone for their many contributions to what was a very successful and meaningful evening. The weather just held up although the wind was challenging and a good time was had by all.

Local History Day focusing on Rumburgh, All Saints & St. Nicholas South Elmham
and Surrounding Villages - 8 June 2024

The day was held on Saturday 8 June 2024 at Rumburgh and St. Michael Village Hall. Advertising for the day started in late 2023 when the Rumburgh Village Hall was booked. The call was out for historical contributions to display on the day and to share with those visiting. In the months preceding, the advertising increased with posters appearing on notice boards and Face Book Groups. People were talking about it in the villages and towns, it was going to be a big day.

And what a day it was! There was so much material to look at and so many great photos. We had sixteen tables with their displays on various elements of our local history including, The Rumburgh Buck, The South Elmham and District Local History Group, The Rumburgh and St. Lawrence Women’s Institute, Old Golly Molly, The Clarke Family history and Caroline Cardwell’s interesting selection of historical items and maps.  It was a great way for the villagers of our area to come together and for some people a chance to meet up with old school friends and neighbours that they had not seen in many years. It was a day of family history too with people who had contacted me in advance of the day with their research documents.

Thank you so much to all of you that helped and supported the day. Thanks to those of you that set up the displays, served the refreshments and contributed with all your marvellous documents, photographs and artefacts.

We met so many interesting people and we all had such fun sharing our memories of Rumburgh and The Saints Villages.

At one point the hall was packed out, only getting quieter when people left to have lunch. The hall became packed out again at 2.00pm for the presentation by Tim Clarke about The Rumburgh Coach Builders and Blacksmiths, thanks go to Tim for this and bringing along all the wonderful artefacts and documents.

Thank you to Christine Wilson who supported me from the word go last year with the idea of the history day.

Thank you to Geoffrey Robinson from the Suffolk Local History Council for being there to support the day, and Brian Howard from the Halesworth Museum.

There are just too many other people to also thank - those of you that came along and made the day a success!

We managed to raise £200.00 for Rumburgh Church.

I will be sharing more information of the day and my plans for the next Local History Day very soon. If you missed the day, don’t worry you can still contribute to the recording of local history and I hope you will be able to attend the next history event.

So, in the mean time you can contact me via email at sonia.history.rec@gmail.com
