Rumburgh & St. Michael Newsletters
15th June 2025
It seems ages since I last sent out an email so a few things to tell you about. Going back to May….
Thursday 8th May – VE Day. “ The community came together at Rumburgh Buck for an afternoon tea donated by The Buck and lots of very lovely cakes from various people around the villages. Just over 60 people attended, lots of singing and even dancing took place, it was a lovely fun afternoon enjoyed by all. Funds raised reached £500 which was donated to SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity , also known as the Soldiers’, Sailors’, and Airmen’s Families Association, is a UK charity that provides trusted support to serving men and women and veterans from the British Armed Forces and their families or dependents. Anyone who is currently serving or has ever served in the Royal navy, British Army or Royal Air Force and their families, both regulars and reserves , is eligible for their help”. – Stella.
Saturday 31st May.” Thank you to all who were able to come to the concert given by young professional singers, The Montsagur Quartet. We are already planning the next concert, for later in the year, and in excess of £780 was made to add to restoration funds for Rumburgh Church, which was absolutely built to be sung in, all those years ago. Thanks again to everyone”: Jo and Alex.
Moving into June, after the end of this month Cutlers Hill are no longer delivering prescriptions to the Rumburgh Buck. There are a couple of alternatives, they can be collected, they can be delivered by Royal Mail and they can also be delivered for a charge by Cutlers Hill. I forgot to ask if they can be collected at Boots…
I expect many of you will have seen the road closure for New Road ( some satnavs still think part of this is called Banks Lane) It will be closed on Monday June 16th for 9 weeks. Essex and Suffolk Water apologise for any inconvenience. Their number is 0345 782 0999. There is also a sign in Mill Road with lots of painted lines, where I guess they might also be working.
On to something more cheerful, for those of you who like to watch the cricket being played on the Rumburgh ground, the next home match is on Wednesday 18th June, starting at 6pm( ish.)
Thursday June 19th is the next community coffee morning held in Rumburgh village hall. 10:30 am – 12 noon. All welcome.
8) The next meeting for the History Club on Thursday 26th is “Ravishing Rood Screens” by Dave Steward starting at 7:30pm after the AGM which begins at 7:00pm at St. Margaret South Elmham Village Hall IP20 0PN. Everyone is most welcome, you do not have to be a member to attend. £3 on the door, £1 for members which includes refreshments.
The Church (St. Margaret SE) is having a Classic Vehicle Day on Saturday 21st June, 10 – 4pm. Classic cars, tractors and motorbikes. Bar, BBQ, refreshment tent with delicious homemade cakes and savouries. Hamper raffle, stalls and games. All this is being held on Philip Kidner’s meadow, IP20 0PJ. Signposted from the Church.

21st May 2025
Dear All,
A message from Eagles Vets. After a shaky start with the weather, the Rumburgh fete was again a great success. We had so much fun with the dog show raising £96 for the fete. Three classes are a firm favourite which are: handsome hound, prettiest bitch and young handler with over 15 entries per class. We look forward to seeing your furry friends next year.
Thank you x 2.
I would like to thank everyone who kindly gave donations, made cakes, sausage rolls etc. in aid of Rumburgh Church. Thanks to Chrissy and Evelyn who helped and supported me on May day. Also to my family that put the covers up on the day to make it all possible. With all your help £715 was raised. - Pam Harris. P.s. Someone kindly left a square cake tin with blue clips round the edge just before May Day. I don't know who this was, but would you like it back?
There was also a cake tin left in the tea tent, Pam Fenner is waiting to return this.
Sange
Hello everyone,
Hope you’ve all recovered from last week’s activities , both the May Day Fete and the VE celebrations. I left for France two days after the Fete so missed the VE celebrations organised by Stella at the Buck. No doubt they were a great success, as was the May Day Fete.
Many many thanks go to all the village stall holders who worked very hard behind the scenes preparing the stalls for the big day; the Raffle, Tombola , the BBQ , the Plant stall , the Book stall and especially the Children’s games which attracted many and created a lot of hilarity.
Thank also to Paul Watkin for providing the Maypole without which it wouldn’t be Rumburgh Fete, and to Michael Dines who nobly manned the PA and kept us informed of the programme.
Also many many thanks to the other helpers at the entrance gates ,the site builders and those who transported all the plants and other essential equipment , not forgetting Stuart who held it all together.
One final huge thanks to everyone who supplied the refreshment tent with delicious cakes ,sausage rolls and gluten free bakes, and to the helpers serving the refreshments and doing sterling work battling with the hot water boilers!! Also to Gill, who manned the cash desk with some help from Annie.
Without the involvement of all the many willing volunteers, Rumburgh May Day Fete would not have been so successful. Long may it continue! -
Josie

Dear All,
Please see latest newsletter with various bits of info for you.
1) May Day result -although there may be a slight adjustment to this but as it stands we made £3,700 at this year's fete. This is a record and up by £900 on last year. This was probably helped by there being 10% more people attending.
2) Please see attached poster.
3) A request from Tony Goldson. "Since Christmas donations have reduced for the Halesworth and surrounding Food bank and Larder. Donations from Rumburgh and surrounding villages has reduced dramatically. I have 3 or 4 donations a week and these are really appreciated, but we need more. So please give a little and help support those people who are really struggling at this time. Every donation however small is used and appreciated." The Food bank drop off in Rumburgh is at Tony's house, Blything View, The Street, IP19 0NN Thanks in advance.
4) Cricket - 2 games so far. Halesworth Pumas started with two games called off. One weather based, the other, an away game due to facilities being damaged by the weather. Frustrating, but the club moves forward. Friday saw the "Rum old boys" hit an astounding 173 against the pumas team who came short by just 20 runs (and one player, with a late call off and no time to replace) Wednesday 12th however saw a brighter outcome, pumas captained by Billy Scriven and Rob Ling took Thorpness to task, a delightful batting saw 147 runs registered in the innings of 20 overs, 3 players retiring. The next home game at Rumburgh is on Friday 21st June 6pm. You are most welcome to watch the game, with or without liquid refreshments.
5) Just a reminder there will be a coffee morning in Rumburgh Village Hall on Thursday 20th June. Usual time 10:30 - 12:00 noon.
All welcome, a good chance to catch up with friends and or make new ones. There are always plenty of cakes, and a box of Rumburgh recipes has been found and available to purchase at £2 each.
Have a good weekend, Let's hope it isn't too wet!
Sange and Steve.
15th May 2024
Dear All, A reminder that the Community Coffee Morning is this Thursday in Rumburgh Village Hall. Usual time, 10:30 - 12:00. where you can browse any books that weren't sold at the fete and exchange views on the fete, plus the usual good coffee, cakes and conversation.
Helen Gordon has written a good report of the fete on Facebook. This is a report for those not on Facebook.
What a splendid day was had by all last Monday at the Fete, with many of the villagers involved in some way . Congratulations to all who contributed to the success; we made a record amount for the insurance premium for the hall and its many activities; the precise figure we will know later once all the fees and expenses have been included.
Thanks must first go to the ground team, led by Stuart, who transported all the tents and hardware to and from the village hall and arranged for services, water and power from surrounding houses, the PA system plus meat for the BBQ.
Next, a huge thank you to the BBQ team who worked almost non-stop to satisfy the huge queues that suddenly appeared once the cooking smell wafted over the Pleasure Ground.
Also many thanks to the stall holders, who spent hours preparing items for the big day, and also made record takings. As always the Plant, Raffle and Tombola stall were extremely popular with the tombola selling out by 12:30. The Raffle stall, led by Helen and her team, had a steady stream of eager buyers all day hoping to buy the lucky ticket to win one or more of the very generous prizes donated by local businesses. Thanks to Winky who helped with the collection of books, plants and puzzles in the morning, helped on the puzzle stall day and then returned left over books, puzzles and other things. It was a great help.
The refreshment tent was very busy all day and made record amount in takings. Many thanks to the helper servers and army of home bakers who turned up with tasty savouries; wonderful cakes and cupcakes; flapjacks and even gluten-free cakes. The constant demand for liquid refreshment was met by Charlotte, Ali PJ, Pam F, Lorna and Hetty. The village hall trustees were delighted last year to have a large refreshment tent gifted by John Symes and it was an ideal place for visitors to sit and enjoy their teas.
The very welcome addition of the dog show in the last two years, has made a tremendous difference to the numbers coming to the fete, making it a great attraction and an enjoyable event for the whole family. Many thanks to Angela Kingham of Eagle Vets for organising and managing it. Other thanks must go to the First Responders who fulfil a very important and vital role in the village and surrounding area and also to the Bowls Club for running the highly competitive Boules competition.
Finally, the Village Fete has been a tradition in Rumburgh for many years, thanks to 'Mr Maypole' Paul Watkin, and to the Kitchen Band for the accompanying music. The Fete would not be complete without the Rumburgh Morris performing their traditional dances.
Josie Dutton,
On behalf of Village Hall Trustee.

7th September 2023
Dear All,
1) Not good news to start off with. An oil tank was broken into and emptied last Wednesday in All Saints.
2) Helen Gordon and Chrissy Hughes held a very successful Afternoon Tea raising money for Breast Cancer Now. As like last year, the weather and cakes on offer were fantastic. So far £781.05 has been collected with more being pledged. Helen and Chrissy would like to thank everyone who helped on the day with teas, coffees, raffle, washing up, donating and attending. Apparently it is now an annual event so they will be back next year to host another one.
3)' Join us this Saturday the 9th for the annual church to church bike Ride & Stride.
Sponsorship forms available from Evelyn (01986 785467)
Money raised goes to help repair and maintain all Suffolk historic churches. Rumburgh is in particular need this year with structural damage to the East Window requiring substantial funds over the next year.
We look forward to seeing you at Rumburgh church - open as usual.'
4) The next coffee morning at Rumburgh Village Hall will be on Thursday 21st September, 10:30 - 12 noon. 6 of the regular attendees will be away, please support if you can. There are always good cakes, chance to chat and catch up with friends or make new ones. Some of you will know that I usually draw the club 100 numbers after the raffle. As I will be away, This was done at the Afternoon tea on Tuesday. 1st prize was Shirley Basey-Fisher and 2nd prize was Pip Cullingford. Cheques on their way to you.
5) Although we are still very much enjoying summer weather, it doesn't seem possible that Whist will be starting next month. The dates are all second Saturdays in the month, October 14th, November 11th, December 9th. January 20th which is the third Saturday, and the second Saturdays in Feb 10th, and March 9th. We all had such a good time whist was continued into April. April 13th has already been pencilled in for next year. Time is still the same, 6:45 for 7pm start, and the price is the same. £3 per person to include refreshments half way through the evening.
6) Also in October, on Thursday 19th, We will be holding a coffee morning to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. We already have plenty of puzzles and books, but happy to receive plants and cakes please.
Hope you all have a great weekend, we are just off to the beach. Sange and Steve. - but I won't send this until we are back, which is just as well as I have something to add.
7) I have just paid £2:50p to get a birthday card from the Post Office. The reason was that the 2nd class stamp used was a counterfeit, possibly sold on Amazon or bought at a corner shop. Even with a magnifying glass we couldn't see any difference between that and the new ones in the drawer. Oh and next week, the cost of a 1st class stamp will be £1:25p !!
Best Wishes
Sange and Steve

Dear All,
Long time no type, not much has been going on really with winter weather etc. Fortunately although cold, the Rumburgh litter pick a couple of weeks ago was a huge success. 11 plus bags of litter and various objects were collected over the weekend from ditches and roadsides by willing helpers . It is proposed making this a biannual event. Thank you to all concerned - Julie and Winky.
The following weekend, which was joined in an extraordinary Litter Pick bringing in over 19 bags of litter (a TV and a fridge) painstakingly retrieved from our ditches and roadsides. Please keep this up it's brilliant. www.keepbritain-tidy.org and love our environment.
A massive thank you from Three Saints PC.

Sad news. - Brenda Clarke who lived in Rumburgh for many years moved to Beech House in Halesworth at the beginning of July 2022. ' All the staff were absolutely wonderful; so incredibly compassionate and conscientious in their care and communication with the family.' Brenda's funeral is Friday 14th April , 11am at Rumburgh Church with a light buffet at the Rumburgh Buck. Brenda's family would like to warmly invite all who knew her, in a celebration of her life and a marking of her passing. A donation in lieu of flowers would be appreciated; the precise charity has yet to be decided but will probably be a local dementia group or dementia research. The family would also like to collate a book of memories about her, so if anyone would like to contribute, perhaps they could prepare something more detailed and personal, which could be added to the book of condolence.
Faith at Rosedales, Halesworth, is organising the funeral and can be contacted for further details when firm plans - such as the charity chosen - are in place.
Finally a reminder that on Sunday 26th March British Summertime begins when the clocks move on an hour. Let's hope we have some summer weather too.
Take care,
Sange and Steve.

3) 'Thursday 20th October - 7:30pm The A.G.M for Rumburgh and St. Michael Village Hall committee. The current trustees - 8 of us have been working on ideas for the refurbishment of the village hall. An architect has now been appointed to come up with plans for us to consider. Amongst other things, these will address the need for a disabled toilet, bigger kitchen, better storage and some improvements to lighting and decor. Because that project will take a lot of our time and effort, especially the fund raising, we hope there are people in the village hall who might like to help organise next year's May Day. The fete has been held for decades but the last couple of years it had to be cancelled, once because of Covid and this year because of the late Queen's Jubilee. There is a plan, a time line, guidelines and a list of contacts and now we would like a May Day committee to take on this organisation. No committee, No fete!
Please come to the village hall on October 20th for a drink and to meet others and discuss how you can help' - Hetty.

Small groups can once again visit the house ( the subject of Christine's book Miss Savidge Moves Her House). Anyone who might be interested in a visit to the house in Wells is asked to contact Andrew Lindqvist (01986 785 467, andrewlindqvist@btinternet.com) With an indication of approximate numbers, arrangements for a visit such as transport and cost can be considered.

16th July 2022
Dear All,
What better place to be on a hot afternoon than in the office sending you a newsletter.
A big "Thank You" from Hannah and Sharon and to all the wonderful staff and customers at the Rumburgh Buck.
Thank you for donating and participating in our charity cream tea fundraiser on Sunday 10th July. We raised over £700 on the day for the Trek 24 EAAA walk that we are doing in September. The huge response will help us walk the 24 miles for fundraising on behalf of East Anglia Air Ambulance which is so vital to our rural community.
Sponsor forms are behind the bar if anyone wishes to support us and this amazing cause. It was a great afternoon, lovely raffle, a cake to guess the
weight of, a jar to guess the number of sweets in and a mad hatters hat competition. Chrissie Archer- Munro really was the obvious winner, her hat
was very clever Thank you again, Hannah and Sharon.. ( photos can be found on FaceBook.)
CHARITY CRICKET EVENT
A big thankyou to all those involved in making the Rumburgh Cricket Pitch match-perfect for the Charity Cricket Event hosted there on Saturday 9th July. We were additionally blessed with perfect weather; the sun shone and a gentle breeze kept conditions perfect, the bunting flapping and the Ukrainian flag flying.
Four teams of seven faced each other in a fast paced, competitive round robin competition. The run rates went up as the day progressed and there were fine displays of ability, humour and sportsmanship. A huge thankyou to all those who took part and congratulations on a very successful day.
It was decided to make the event an opportunity to support the British Red Cross Ukraine Appeal and the vital work that they carry out. A big thankyou to Allens Butchers of Halesworth who so kindly donated all the meat. With their huge support we were able to raise an amazing total of £905 from the BBQ, cake stall and donations. This has been donated and gratefully received.
Thankyou so much to all those who participated, umpired, flipped burgers, baked cakes and came to support the day. A wonderful community event and credit to all.
Katharine Thistlethwayte
Now onto other things......

ready. You can check your bin collection day and report any missed bins at https://eastsuffolk.co/bins
July Coffee Morning in Rumburgh Village hall has been cancelled this month.
There are several people in the village with Covid so we didn't think it would be wise. Also if it's another hot day, you might prefer to stay cool indoors. The August Coffee Morning has been also been cancelled. With summer holidays, and no doubt flights involved for some, there are likely to still be Covid cases around. Let's keep our fingers crossed for September.
Looking ahead to the autumn: Whist has been pencilled in for the second Saturday in October/November/December. It would be very helpful if you could
please let us know if it is likely that you will be able to join us.
There are still some allotments available in Rumburgh, £10 for a year. The ground will be turned over for you when you are ready to start. Please
Contact Boyd if you are interested. parish.clerk.rumburgh@btinternet.com

Another big "thank you" to everyone who picked litter for the litter pick, and to those who pick up litter in the village all through the year. Norse donated the 10 litre bag hoops and picks and collected 9 bags of litter that residents had collected. We hope to have another weekend pick when the verges and hedges aren't so leafy.
Although I haven't seen it myself, apparantly it has been on FaceBook that all car parks in Halesworth will be free on this Saturday.
If you haven't noticed and I didn't until recently that the post box in the Co-Op is now back in use.
Is there anyone in Rumburgh who would like to run the Produce Show in Rumburgh Village Hall which should be on August 6th this year. Unfortunately Lisa is on holiday and unable to organise it. However Lisa does have all the information and is happy to pass it on before she goes away. Please could all those with trophies return them to Lisa or David Pallant.
And finally, just a reminder about the Classic Tractor Day, info on the poster below.
Hope you all have a really good weekend, Sange and Steve.

A big thank you to Piet who had already prepared the questions, no doubt they will get used in The Buck quiz. Apologies for not letting you know sooner. Having had no power on Wednesday and the Internet not back on until late evening meant I couldn't do any chasing up. Having a flat mobile phone didn't help, but on the plus side I have heard of a small solar powered charger which sits on the window sill and has 2 USB points. I will be investigating that ! Time to get walking again!
At this time of year we start to think about the mud drying up and getting out to walk in the beautiful English Countryside again, but where to find new and interesting walks?
Walking in Suffolk https://www.walkinginengland.co.uk/suffolk has hundreds of walks to download and print, free, it also has books of walks, details of all the walking groups in the county and much more. Whether you want to walk on your own or with a group all the information is there in one place.
John Harris (the custodian of the website) said ‘There is so much walking information on the web but it is difficult to find. Walking in Suffolk (part of the Walking in England website) has brought it together in one place so whether you are walking from home, or away on holiday, you will be able to find a walk suitable for you’.
With walks from half a mile to twelve miles plus long, and a note of suitability for pushchairs and wheelchairs, everyone can find a walk to enjoy.
So home or away, check out the websites and get walking!

On Wednesday December 8th at 7:30 pm in Rumburgh Village Hall we are pleased to welcome Ian Bedford, who is one of the leading authorities in the country on biodiversity, soil health and the effects of climate change on nature and , or course gardens.
This is Ian's own description of the talk he will be giving: Gardens for Us & Them - Despite many worrying facts about Global Warming and Climate Change and how it will affect the ecosystems, around 35% of Britain's land mass is protected from development within National Parks and Nature Reserves. Many projects are also underway to try and connect these protected areas so that their wildlife doesn't suffer through geographic isolation. Home gardens can all become valuable stepping stones for our wildlife in the quest to connect the natural reserves. This talk explains some of the very easy things we can all do to help achieve this, for us and the future generations of our population and Britain's wildlife. Guests welcome.
